Routes & Operations
Dedicated Route
A dedicated route assigns a driver to a single customer or a consistent set of lanes, rather than mixing freight from the general network. Dedicated freight usually offers more predictable schedules, home time, and pay than general OTR work, since the lanes and volume are contracted and known in advance.
Dedicated accounts pair a driver or group of drivers with a specific shipper's freight on a recurring basis, which lets carriers offer more consistent schedules and home time than general-freight OTR work, where lanes and loads can vary day to day. Dedicated routes can range from regional to OTR distances depending on the customer's shipping pattern, but the defining trait is predictability: the driver generally knows their lanes, delivery windows, and expected home time well in advance. Dedicated roles are frequently used in recruiting as a selling point specifically for drivers who want OTR-level miles but with far more schedule predictability than general freight offers.
Why it matters for recruiting and operations
Dedicated accounts tend to have meaningfully lower turnover than general freight because the predictability directly addresses one of drivers' top frustrations with OTR work — not knowing their schedule week to week. Recruiters who can offer dedicated openings alongside general OTR roles often find they convert hesitant applicants who want mileage pay without full schedule unpredictability.
