Owner Operator Business
Freight Factoring
Freight factoring is a financing arrangement where a trucking company or owner operator sells its unpaid freight invoices to a factoring company for immediate cash, minus a fee, instead of waiting the usual 30-plus days for a broker or shipper to pay. It's widely used by owner operators and small carriers to smooth cash flow between loads.
Because freight bills are commonly paid on 30, 45, or 60-day terms, a carrier or owner operator can face a cash flow gap between covering fuel, truck payments, and other expenses now and getting paid for a load weeks later. Factoring companies bridge that gap by purchasing the invoice at a discount and advancing most of its value immediately, then collecting payment from the broker or shipper directly. Factoring is especially common among newer owner operators and small fleets that don't yet have the cash reserves to comfortably wait out standard payment terms, and many carriers that lease on owner operators offer factoring as a value-added service to make their lease-on offer more attractive.
Why it matters for recruiting and operations
Offering factoring (or a partnership with a factoring company) is a common differentiator carriers use when recruiting owner operators, since cash flow is one of the biggest practical challenges new owner operators face. Recruiters working owner operator leads can use factoring access as a concrete answer to a common objection: “how do I cover expenses while waiting to get paid?”
