Team Driving
Team driving pairs two CDL drivers on a single truck, alternating who drives while the other rests in the sleeper berth, so the truck itself keeps moving almost continuously within HOS limits. Team freight typically moves faster over long distances than solo driving and often pays a higher per-mile rate split between the two drivers.
In a team driving setup, one driver operates the vehicle while the second driver is off-duty or in the sleeper berth, and they rotate so that, collectively, the truck can run close to 24 hours a day while each individual driver still stays within their own HOS limits. Team freight is in demand for time-sensitive, high-value, or expedited loads that need to cover long distances faster than a solo driver's HOS limits would allow. Teams are often made up of spouses, family members, or friends who choose to run together, and some carriers also offer “team matching” to pair unrelated drivers who want team pay but don't have an existing partner.
Why it matters for recruiting and operations
Team positions are a distinct recruiting segment that requires either sourcing driver pairs together or offering a team-matching program, since most solo-driver sourcing channels don't naturally surface pre-formed teams. Carriers running expedited or time-sensitive freight often struggle specifically to fill team positions, making it a frequent niche in driver recruiting that benefits from targeted messaging.
