Licenses & Endorsements

    Hazmat Endorsement (H Endorsement)

The Hazmat (H) endorsement authorizes a CDL holder to transport hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding under federal rules. Obtaining it requires passing a knowledge test and a TSA background check, including fingerprinting, and it must be renewed periodically along with the fingerprint-based threat assessment.

The Hazmat endorsement is one of the more involved CDL endorsements to obtain because it requires a TSA Security Threat Assessment in addition to the standard state knowledge test — applicants are fingerprinted and undergo a background check before the endorsement is issued. Drivers hauling hazardous materials in placarded quantities (certain chemicals, explosives, flammable liquids, and similar freight classes) must hold this endorsement, and carriers operating in hazmat freight must verify it's current, not expired, as part of the DQF and hiring process. Because of the added screening burden, drivers with an active Hazmat endorsement are often a smaller and more sought-after applicant pool than general freight drivers.

Why it matters for recruiting and operations

The TSA background check requirement means hazmat-endorsed drivers take longer to produce and are a scarcer applicant pool, so carriers hauling hazmat freight typically need to recruit further in advance and pay closer attention to sourcing channels that reach this specific group. Verifying the endorsement is current (not lapsed) is also a standard prescreening and DQF check for any hazmat-hauling role.
