Tanker Endorsement (N Endorsement)
The Tanker (N) endorsement authorizes a CDL holder to operate a vehicle carrying liquid or gaseous cargo in a tank with a rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. It requires passing a dedicated knowledge test covering the unique handling characteristics of tank vehicles, such as cargo surge and rollover risk.
The Tanker endorsement addresses the distinct driving skills tank vehicles require, since a partially full tank can surge during braking and turning in ways that a van or flatbed trailer does not, increasing rollover risk if not handled correctly. Drivers hauling fuel, chemicals, food-grade liquids, or other bulk liquid and gas freight in large tanks need this endorsement, and it's often combined with a Hazmat endorsement for drivers hauling hazardous liquids (sometimes informally called a “tanker-hazmat” or “X” combination endorsement). Carriers in tanker freight verify the endorsement is active and look for tanker-specific experience given the different handling skills involved.
Why it matters for recruiting and operations
Tanker freight recruiting draws from a narrower applicant pool than general dry van freight, both because of the endorsement requirement and because carriers often prefer drivers with prior tanker experience given the handling differences. This makes sourcing and screening specifically for tanker-qualified drivers, rather than general CDL-A applicants, important for carriers in that segment.
