IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement)
IFTA is an agreement among the lower 48 US states and most Canadian provinces that lets a carrier report and pay fuel taxes through a single base jurisdiction instead of separately in every state driven through. Carriers file a quarterly IFTA return reporting total miles and fuel purchased by jurisdiction, and taxes are reconciled and redistributed between member jurisdictions accordingly.
Before IFTA, carriers had to obtain fuel tax permits and file separate reports with every state their trucks operated in, since fuel tax rates vary by jurisdiction. IFTA consolidates this: a carrier registers in one base jurisdiction, tracks miles driven and fuel purchased in each member state or province, and files one quarterly return that reconciles what's owed across all jurisdictions. Most interstate carriers and owner operators running their own authority are required to carry an IFTA license and decal and keep accurate mileage and fuel purchase records to support quarterly filings.
Why it matters for recruiting and operations
IFTA compliance is mostly relevant to owner operators running their own authority and to carriers' back-office operations rather than to driver recruiting messaging directly, but it's useful context for recruiters fielding questions from independent-authority owner operator prospects about the administrative side of running their own business. Accurate mileage records from ELD data also directly support IFTA reporting.
