FMCSA & Compliance
USDOT Number
A USDOT number is the unique identifier FMCSA assigns to companies that operate commercial motor vehicles, used to track safety records, inspections, crash reports, and audit results for that entity. Most companies operating CMVs in interstate commerce, and many operating intrastate, are required to register for and display a USDOT number.
The USDOT number functions as a company's permanent identifier in FMCSA's safety and compliance systems, linking inspection results, crash data, and audit history to that specific carrier over time — this is the data that ultimately feeds a carrier's CSA scores. A company must have an active USDOT number to operate commercial vehicles legally, and it must be displayed on the power unit. It's distinct from MC authority: the USDOT number tracks safety data, while MC authority (where applicable) grants the legal right to haul regulated freight for hire.
Why it matters for recruiting and operations
A carrier's USDOT number and the safety history tied to it are a visible, checkable signal for driver applicants evaluating a company — tools like FMCSA's SAFER system let prospective drivers look up a carrier's inspection and crash history before applying. Recruiters at carriers with a clean safety record under their USDOT number can use that transparently as a selling point to safety-conscious applicants.
