FMCSA & Compliance

    CSA Score (Compliance, Safety, Accountability)

CSA scores come from FMCSA's Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, which measures a carrier's safety performance across categories called BASICs (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories) using roadside inspection and crash data. Higher scores in a BASIC indicate worse relative safety performance and can trigger increased FMCSA scrutiny, including interventions or audits.

FMCSA's CSA program calculates scores in several BASIC categories — such as Unsafe Driving, Hours-of-Service Compliance, and Vehicle Maintenance — using a carrier's roadside inspection violations and crash history over a rolling period, weighted by severity and recency. Carriers exceeding intervention thresholds in a BASIC may face warning letters, targeted interventions, or full compliance reviews from FMCSA. CSA scores are publicly accessible and widely checked by shippers, insurers, and increasingly by prospective drivers evaluating whether a carrier runs a safe, well-maintained operation.

Why it matters for recruiting and operations

Because CSA scores are public, they function as a trust signal drivers and other carriers can check directly, and a clean score is a legitimate recruiting asset a safety-conscious applicant will notice. On the flip side, elevated CSA scores can raise insurance costs and invite more frequent roadside inspections, both of which indirectly squeeze the budget and driver experience a carrier can offer, making CSA management and recruiting success connected in practice.
